Week 5 Recap

Wow, what a night last night. In addition to having a few firsts, I also discovered how difficult it is to draw straight lines on a field using a spray cart that had a broken handle. With this crazy drought and watering restrictions the field is in pretty bad shape but that should improve next season with an entirely new field surface being put in by PAL. Hopefully that drought will end too.

So now, on to the games from last night:

Don't Touch Our Balls lost. That's not a typo. They actually lost. I believe that is the first regular season loss in which they did not forfeit (last year basically the entire team took a night off to go to the Rays season opener). In all fairness, most of the team was missing due to a wedding so only a few stragglers from the Green Machine made it out to the fields. It couldn't have come at a better time for Anything But Blue Balls and they were able to capitalize by scoring the winning run in the bottom of the 5th inning. Final score: ABBB 4 - DTOB 3

Balls N Dolls and Quit Yer Pitchin battled it out in a defensive showdown for the ages. They had to play an extra fram to decide the outcome of the game but still finished the game in less than 40 minutes. Of course the game might have been a couple of minutes shorter if it weren't for Amanda on QYP showing off her amazing leg kicks instead of actually kicking the ball on 2 straight pitches. The end of this game was a classic. Balls N Dolls were up in the bottom of the 6th with 1 out and runners on 2nd and 3rd and the score tied at 0. The ball was kicked towards the third baseman and kept Rachel stuck on third but the Balls N Dolls baserunner from second had made it half way to 3rd base. Unfortunately, rather than hold on to the ball and allow the baserunner back to 2nd, resulting in a bases loaded situation, Quit Yer Pitching went for the out and Rachel took advantage of the distraction and ran home for the walk off run. BND 1 - QYP 0

Suck My Kick defeated I'd Hit It Again 3-0. I honestly have no idea what happened in this game since no one told me so I will just make something up.

The outlook wasn't brilliant for the I'd Hit It 11 that day;
The score was 3 to 0, with but one inning more to play,
And then when Cole died at first, and Empkey did the same,
A sickly silence fell upon the patrons of the game.

A straggling few got up to go in deep despair. The rest
Clung to that hope which springs eternal in the human breast:
They thought, if only Erik could get but a whack at that-
We'd put up even money, now, with Erik at the bat.

But Warwick preceeded Erik, as did also Stacey Bake(r),
And the former was a lulu and the latter was a cake;
So upon that stricken multitude grim melancholy sat,
For there seemed but little chance of Erik's getting to the bat.

But Warwick let drive a single, to the woderment of all,
And Bake(r), the much despis-ed, tore the cover off the ball;
And when the dust had lifted, and the men saw what had occured,
There was Stacey safe at second and Warwick a-hugging third.

Then from 5,000 throats and more there rose a lusty yell;
It rumbled through the valley, it rattled in the dell:
It knocked upon the mountain and recoiled upon the flat,
For Erik, mighty Erik, was advancing to the bat.

There was ease in Erik's manner as he stepped into his place;
There was pride in Erik's bearing and a smile on Erik's face.
And when, responding to the cheers, he lightly doffed his hat,
No stranger in the crowd could doubt t'was Erik at the bat.

Ten thousand eyes were on him as he rubbed his hands with dirt;
Five thousand tongues applauded when he wiped them on his shirt.
Then while the writhing pitcher ground the ball into his hip,
Defiance gleamed in Erik's eye, a snear curled Erik's lip.

And now the red-rubber-covered sphere came hurtling through the air,
And Erik stood a-watching it in haughty grandeur there.
Close by the sturdy kicker the ball unheaded sped-
"That ain't my style," said Erik. "Strike one," the ref said.

From the benches, black with people, there went up a muffled roar,
Like the beating of the storm-waves on a stern and distant shore.
"Kill him! Kill the ref!" shouted someone on the stand:
And it's likely they'd a-killed him had not Erik raised his hand.

With a smile of Christian charity great Erik's visage shown;
He stilled the rising tumult; he bade the game go on;
He signaled to the pitcher, and once more the spheroid flew:
But Erik still ignored it, and the ref said, "strike two."

"Fraud!" cried the maddened thousands, and echo answered fraud;
But one scornful look from Erik and the audience was awed.
They saw his face grow stern and cold, they saw his muscles strain,
And they knew that Erik wouldn't let that ball go by again.

The sneer is gone from Erik's lip, his teeth are clenched in hate;
He pounds with cruel violence, his foot upon the plate.
And now the pitcher holds the ball, and now he lets it rip,
And now the air is shattered by the force of Erik's kick.

Oh somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright;
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout;
But there is no joy in I'd Hit It Againville - Mighty Erik has struck out.

You will just have to believe that that is a completely accurate description of the game.

So now that that's over with, lets get on to the battle of the defeateds. All Banged Up was finally able to find their scoring mojo and after struggling to score all season they put up a 6 spot on the BA-52's. They maybe could have scored more as Jeni was dissapointed that she was stranded at third. Shaina from the BA-52's did her best to help out her team but was dissapointed in her performance. She bunted to get to first and said that bunting made her feel very very dirty. Final Score: ABU 6- BA-52's 3.

Smack My Pitch Up was able to post another impressive defensive showing this week, this time with only 5 guys but they were no where near as successful on offense and lost to Saved By The Ball by the score of 1-0. SMPU's attendance woes really hurt them though this week as they failed to provide enough refs for the 7pm game and have to take a penalty forfeit in the standings.

The Seminoles were able to find their winning way again after last week's loss by defeating Also Available in Sober 4-0 in this week's contest. I don't really know too much about this game either (what is it with games in the black hole of field C?) and there were no Seminoles to ask how the game went by the time I made it to MacDinton's last night.

I think that's a perfectly accuaret description of how our game went.
