Summer Pre-Season Kick-Off Party

Hello Big Guava Kickballers:

We are less than one DAY away for the second annual Big Guava Summer Kickball Season!!!! How excited are you??!? You’ll be able to get your first taste of the summer 2011 season on Wednesday 25 MAY 2011!!! That’s right; TOMORROW NIGHT!!!! We will be kicking off the summer season with our Pre-Season Meet and Greet Bash at MacDintons, starting at 7:30pm. There will be free beer given away for the early birds and drink specials all night.

WAKA will buy the team with the most people there by 8:15pm a round of shots. So make sure you check in with me, Jaime, tiny little Blonde at the table with the shiny new red Kickball, to get your name-tag and free beer wrist band!

The theme for this pre-season bash will be…. Wait for it…. GRAFFITI PARTY! Wait... what?? OK for those of you who never went to college, were never in a fraternity/sorority, is new to kickball, or lived under a rock.. Here is the deal…
1. Wear a white shirt….
2. Make sure this is a crappy white shirt that did not cost you more than five dollars or so..
3. Bring some sharpie markers
4. Become artistic geniuses and creative writing superstars as you decorate the heck out of fellow teammates and fellow Kickballers t-shirts. (Tip: Always ask someone’s permission BEFORE writing on them ~J

The party and drink specials will take place at the outside bar. At the Pre-Season Party we will be having a “Chug-off with a twist” Contest as well as a team flip cup and individual King of the Table flip cup tournament. To enter the flip cup team contest it will be $35 dollars per team to participate. Teams will consist of 7 team members at $5 dollars per person. This money will be going straight to Kick-It for Cancer! The individual contests will be $5 dollars per person to enter. There will be TROPHY’s and Medals for winners!!!! Please help out and support this great charity, and earn some bragging rights to kick off the season right!!! If you would be interested in participating in the contests, please let your captains know so I can get an accurate count before the 25th. Yes, Teams can enter more than one team for the contest.

“Wait.. Jaime, what is this Flip cup you all seem so excited about? I am new to all of the Kickball jargon and need some clarification….”

Well… Let me explain..

Standard match consists of anywhere from 4 to 8 players per team. Once you have been placed on a team you cannot switch until after the match is completed. Each team picks a side of the table they want to be on and then each player will fill their cup with a small amount of beer. There is no official amount of beer, but a good rule of thumb is to go up to the first line of your plastic cup if there is any debate. Designate one end of the table as the starting end, and the other as the anchor end. The first player at the starting side will be assigned cup #1 and so on down the line. The game starts when both player #1's tap each other's cup and then tap the table. Also known as "The Gentleman's Start." From there each player #1 will drink the amount of beer in the cup. Then they will place the cup FACE UP on the edge of the table and proceed to flip the cup until it lands FACE DOWN. Then player #2 can drink their beer and proceed to flip, and so on down the line until all team members have flipped. The first team to flip all of their cups wins that game.

If 2 cups on opposing sides land at the same time you go to a tie breaker known as JUNGLE RULES (see below). Remember, if 2 cups hit the table at the same time, it is the cup that settles first that wins.

The winner of the match is the first team to reach the designated amount of game victories. If there are 4 players on each team, the first team to 4 games wins the match. If there are 5 players on each team, the first team to 5 games wins the match, and so on. This method will give every player the chance to start a round. And as always, you must win by 2. (WED tournament: 7 Players, 5 rounds)

JUNGLE RULES

Jungle Rules is when everyone at the table participates at the same time. The entire table will begin with the Gentleman's Start, and then everyone will flip. The first team to have every team member flip their cup will win.

KING OF THE TABLE RULES (KOT)

This can be described as a combination of Survivor and Jungle rules. You can have as many players as your table will hold. The whole table will Gentleman's Start and the last player to flip their cup is voted off. This will continue until 1 player is left, and they are the King of the Table.

A very important rule of KOT is that once the game starts you cannot leave the table until you either lose, or the game is over. With so many people playing it is important to keep the game moving.

CHEATING
If two hands are used to flip or guide the cup it, is an illegal flip. Only one hand is permitted to make the flip. The non-flipping hand may act strictly as balance assistance for the cup on the edge of the table. Sometimes you are forced to play on tables with "less than ideal" edges, so it is necessary for added support. This in no way is meant to help guide the cup during the flip; just to keep it from falling off of the table. Also the non flipping hand must remain completely still during the flip if it is used for balance assistance. This will eliminate any debate about it being used as a guide. The only time contact with the cups by 2 hands is allowed is to place the cup on the edge or to re-set the cup if a complete flip is not made.

Winning Team and winning individual will both receive awards and a very nice buzz.

Flip Cup Physics 1 – Defining the cup

Here we define the geometry and some mechanical properties of the cup. The assumptions are that the cup is a rigid, 1-dimensional (infinitely thin) rotationally symmetric body with a uniform mass distribution along its length.

Flip Cup Physics 2 – Moment of Inertia

Part 1, we determine the moment of inertia about a pivot point, chosen to be on one of the corners. We will again look at 2-dimensional slice through the centre of the cup – subsequent chapters may explore fully 3D models.

With the help of the Parallel Axis Theorem and Mathematica’s “FullSimplify” function, we finally arrive at the following :

OK.. Lesson Over~

Bring CASH!!! Weather you participate or not… Kick it for Cancer is a terrific cause.. Here is a little info about the charity…

What is it?
Kick-It is a new CureSearch for Children’s Cancer national fundraising program that raises money for children’s cancer research by inspiring people to play kickball! Learn more about Kick-It!

Why Kickball?
It all started in May of 2009 when a 10-year-old cancer patient had a big dream;
to cure children’s cancer by playing kickball. Watch Quinn’s story.

Who Plays?
• Schools; elementary, middle, high and colleges
• Corporations; inter-office challenge or company vs. company face off
• Community Groups; athletic leagues (youth and adult), young professional organizations
• Fraternity & Sorority Groups
• Birthday Party’s or Mitzvah Celebrations; gifts made to CureSearch in lieu of presents via Kick-It

There are a ton of different ways to Kick-It for Children’s Cancer, the trick is to find what works best for you. We would love to work with you to organize a Kick-It game with your school, athletic league, company, or organization. Please visit the Kick-It website to sign-up or contact Joya Sain at CureSearch to brainstorm ideas!

It’s not a game for a child waiting for a cure!

See how great they are!!! So, not only will we be drawing silly things on our teammates, participating in contests, winning trophy’s, and having a few free drinks with friends.. WE WILL BE DONATING MONEY TO A GREAT CAUSE!

Can’t wait to see everybody tomorrow night!

Happy Kicking,
~Jaime
