Bayshore - What we have learned so far

Can you believe we already have 4 weeks into the season? At the halfway point of the season we have definitely learned a lot about the players and teams in the league. Here are just a few of the highlights:

The pitcher for Balls N Dolls is the un-Holy love child of Zach Galifianakis and Kenny Powers. If you haven't faced him yet, good luck. When he's on, he's tough to beat. You're fucking out, bitches.

Pick Me Up claims that age is catching up with them. Sure, some of them started playing WAKA kickball when some of you may have still been in Jr High but WAKA is fun for all ages. They actually haven't been too bad this season except for a couple of unlucky breaks. In recent seasons they have definitely been one of the better teams but they just wish you youngins would be easier to beat. The way they put it makes it sound like they are seeking team sponsorship from Ben-Gay and Depends but I don't believe it. They still have plenty of life in them but their schedule doesn't get a whole lot easier.

Some young guns have come to play. Usually, new teams have some difficulty acclimating to the league but no so much this season. I'd Hit It is just crushing teams lately. They may have benefited from a relatively light schedule thus far so the second half of the season could be a better litmus test to see how strong they are against Pick Me Up and Balls and Dolls in their last 2 games of the season. Mark March 15th on your calendar as I'd Hit It faces off against Getting Kicky With It, another new team that has been turning up the heat the last couple of weeks. What's the secret to I'd Hit Its early success? Confidence. In week 2 they won in dramatic fashion in the last inning (and practically mauled one of their star players at the bottom of a pig pile in the process). In Week 4 they were riding really high and feeling quite good after beating up on Your Balls My Foot, because someone had told them that YBMF was the best team in the league. One of the most awesome teams in the league? Yes and they definitely have fun. Best teams? Sadly not so much. Only time will tell whether I'd Hit It can keep hitting it.

Where My Pitches At are really glad to have made the switch from Tuesdays to Thursdays. Now I'm not calling Bayshore a slouch but there is definitely a heavier concentration of tough teams on Breaker right now. Its not always like that as those sorts of things are pretty cyclical and it wasn't long ago that Bayshore was the tougher league. At this point in the Fall season, the old Where My Pitches At team was 0-4 with a combined score of about 853,201 to 0. Right now they are feeling pretty good about themselves with a win a loss and 2 ties.

The Camel Toes are crazy. OK so this is only news to you if you are new to the league but by now it should be quite clear that they are the most ridiculous team in the league and they love that fact. They show up every week in costume, are loud and obnoxious and have a blatant disregard for any team who takes the game too seriously. In other words, they are pretty awesome. In case you missed it, this past week they had some sort of red neck theme (I gave up on actually trying to keep up with their themes long ago). The lovely Carrie decided she was going to sport some padding that made her look pregnant. It made for a pretty fun time to watch the faces of random strangers around her when she would suck back a drink and light up a cigarette. Proceed with caution with this crazy crowd.

We love M&M bowls. No, I am not talking about the little candies that melt in your mouth and not in your hands (although they lie). I'm talking about the great scene at MacDinton's that we get every Thursday night. Think about it the next time you walk into the bar. I'm sure most of you have played with other organizations and after your game, whether its friendly or competitive, everyone just sort of goes their own way and maybe you join a few of your teammates at the bar. Not so with WAKA. We all go back to the same bar and have a great time together and lots of mingling between teams with different t-shirt colors. Now do you get the reference? If, by now you haven't facebook friended 5-10 new people from other teams, you are doing something wrong. So go out of your way and make friends with people on other teams. WAKA is all about creating a social atmosphere for you fools to meet, so do it already.

What do you think of Camel Toes 5.0?

Do's and Don'ts

Hey kids,  Bayshore now has 2 weeks in the books in the season and everyone looks to be having a great time.  It is however time to do a little bit of a recap of the do's and don'ts of the league.

Reffing:
Don't:

  • Don't wonder off in the middle of the game to try to pick up members of the opposite sex. We appreciate your drive but that's what MacDinton's is for.
  • Don't talk or text on your phone. Please pay attention when you ref. The number one complaint we hear about refs is when refs are just not paying attention. You want refs to pay attention in games that you play so you should pay attention when you ref.
  • Don't congregate as a group. Besides not paying attention, when there are too many people standing around "reffing" it can make it unclear to the teams playing who the actual ref is. It happens more often than it should where 3 or more people are reffing 1st or third and on a close play there may be a couple of different calls made. If you ref 2nd base, sorry, you are on your own. Friends gathering out there just get in the way of outfielders

Do:

  • Download an app. If you have an iphone or android phone you can dowload an app that helps keep track of balls, strikes, fouls outs, innings scores and even game time. The iphone app is called iRef - Kickball and the android app is called Kickball Ref Pro. They are both 99 cents and they are both worth it. If you are on your phone during a game, it should be for using one of these apps only.
  • Read the rulebook. Kickball rules aren't terribly complicated. What's best is that they are available for free online. WAKA's website has the Kickball Rules and a Rules FAQ and everyone should read both documents. This is especially true for anyone who has come over from another league as different leagues have slightly different rules. There is nothing more entertaining than arguing a call with someone who is quoting a rule from another league. Keep in mind that in our league, since we have the luxury of extra time on the fields we play 6 innings, not 5.
  • Be on time for games. This one should be a no brainer but in addition to yourself being on time, its also good to try to get the game started on time and get the game pace picked up if its taking too long. Our lights automatically turn off at 9:30pm so if the early games gets delayed and pushes back the late game, its possible that the late game might have to be cut off. Be responsible and respectful.
On Field Stuff:
Don't:
  • Don't bring glass botttles. Glass bottles are a big big no no. If your team brings them, they may be confiscated and your team could face a forfeit.
  • Don't bring exposed cases of beer or leave cans on the ground. We shouldn't see any alcoholic beverage containers on the field.
  • Don't leave cigarette butts in the grass. This is a bigger problem for some teams than others. If you must smoke while playing, don't throw your cigarettes in the grass. Remember that the fields are primarily used by the Police Athletic League program's children during the day and they try to teach the kids that smoking is bad. Don't be a bad example for the kids by littering their field.
  • Don't go streaking. OK so maybe even bringing this up is asking for trouble but there is a good reason for mentioning it. I guess you might think its a good idea but keep in mind that sometimes the PAL building is rented out for kid's birthday parties. You don't really want to spend the rest of your life being court ordered to introduce yourself to your neighbors and warn them about yourself, do you?
  • Don't pee in the bushes. Gentleman, we know you that the good Lord has blessed you with equipment that allows you to go wherever you want, but that doesn't mean you should. The concession stand building has perfectly fine working bathrooms with real running water and we have a port-a-pottie for those of you near field B so you don't have to walk far.
Do:
  • Pour your sports beverages into non-see-through solo cups. We realize you can work up a thirst playing kickball and most of you quench that thirst by drinking a lot of apple juice or interesting new flavors  and colors of Gatorade. Just keep it in the solo cups. We don't want to be showing off our favorite adult sports beverage brands to the neighbors.
  • Pick up your trash. Every season we have some difficulties with this with some new teams and players. Remember that it is a privilege to be allowed to use the PAL Fields. Leave the fields at least as clean as you left them. Keep a box of trash bags in the trunk of your car, just in case.
  • Be Respectful.  Fields in this town are hard to get and we've been very fortunate to have a great relationship with PAL. Always keep in mind that the field is used by kids everyday after school and during the day over the Summer months.
  • Pick up bases. If you team plays the late game and loses, make sure to pick up all of the bases, cones and ball and bring them back to the bleacher area. Don't forget the pitcher's strip. Many a strip have fallen victim to an undiscriminating lawn mower blade because someone forgot to pick it up the night before.
  • Help people remember the rules. We don't need you to be a NARC but this is a community so help your other communities to remember the do's and don'ts so they don't do something stupid that gets the rest of us in trouble.
At the Bar:
Don'ts:
  • Don't get into fights. This should be pretty self explanatory but if you were at the bar around 11:30 or midnight or so last week you saw a pretty epic battle royale between a couple of dudes(non kickballers thankfully). They were probably arguing about which one's girlfriend makes the dumbest looking duckface on her facebook profile pic but MacDinton's security is pretty professional and doesn't mess around.
  • Don't drink and drive. This is generally pretty sound advice even if not on a kickball night. Yes, kickballers do get DUIs, don't let it happen to you. Designate a driver, take a cab, stay at a friend's or move within walking distance of MacDinton's.
Do's:
  • Tip your servers. The staff at MacDinton's does a great job. Thursday nights are pretty hectic and they are running around like crazy behind the bar. Dollar beer night makes for a cheap night of drinking so try to tip based on the service, not just a percentage of your tab. If you are smart you will develop a favorite bartender who will eventually spot you in a crowd and take care of you quickly.
  • Meet other teams. This may be the best thing you can do overall so don't just limit it to your bar experience. In some sports leagues you meet only the people on your own team. With WAKA Kickball you have an opportunity to meet a ton of people from all different teams. Don't be shy, say hello. If you want to talk trash on the field, that's ok, just follow it up by sharing a beer and some friendly conversation at MacDinton's afterwards.

Trash is Bad, Smoking is Bad, MmKay

Well, for the most part week one went off without a hitch. We did have some trash issues though. Remember to pick up all of your trash at the field. Its usually a pretty smart idea to get a cheap box of trash bags and leave them in the trunk of your car for kickball nights. Our biggest trash issue last week was all of the cigarette butts that were left in the grass. If you are going to smoke, please make sure to dispose of your butts responsibly. Remember, the fields are utilized by kids during the day so lets make sure to leave the fields looking at least as good when we leave as they do when we show up. Thanks, everyone!

Love and WAKA Kickball

So tomorrow is Valentines Day. If you are looking for it, WAKA Kickball is a pretty good place to find someone for developing a meaningful relationship or you know... whatever. There are at least a few couples that met through kickball in our Tampa leagues. We have actually been to social events expos where dating services came up to us and loved the dating potential that kickball provided. So if you find someone special this season, congratulations and your welcome.

Of course, if you are looking for something a little bit more short term, we also have this important document.

Breaker still open for registration (but not for long)

The Thursday night Bayshore League has started play but we still have a little bit of time before Tuesday night Breaker starts up. We know that there are a lot of you procrastinators out there but we have to place our t-shirt order on Friday of this week, which means you need to be signed up by Thursday.

If you play in Bayshore and you had fun on Thursday, be sure to tell all of your friends and get them to play on Tuesdays. If you are a returning player from Tuesday and you haven't signed up yet...

Beginners Guide to Bayshore Teams

The Bayshore League is back with 16 teams this Spring and we realize that it is impossible to get to know every team after just one week. Hell its probably impossible to get to know all 16 teams in just one season. So here is our slightly less than accurate run down on each team.

The Old Guard
These teams have been with us for what seams like forever, since before the dawn of time and recorded history (or at least for 2 years or more).
  • Balls N Dolls - Black
Balls N Dolls is always an entertaining team to have in the league. When they decide to show up they can be pretty dominant but they are also the most likely to forfeit. To many of their players are too busy doing Crossfit or P90X to be bothered with kickball. Without fail, during the playoffs they will have a couple of players show up who have hardly showed all season but look like finely performance enhanced atheletes, and an opponent will ask for a roster check to verify that they are in fact signed up for the team.
  • Off Constantly - Royal Blue
This was my team for many many seasons. In the time I played for them we never had a winning season. The season after I left they went undefeated. I try not to take that personally. Last Spring they took a season off but came back soon after and are defending Playoff Champions. Their defense is solid and their offense is explosive
  • Pick Me Up - Irish Green
Some of the players on this team go as far back as the 2nd season in the Bayshore league. Back when they first started playing kickball they had't even invented the Android or iPhone yet and had to run 5 miles in between each base, uphill, in the snow, barefoot. Their experience shows on the field as they play smart.
  • Camel Toes 5.0 - Pink
The Camel Toes are easy to spot. They are loud and boisterous and usually in some sort of costume. In at least one game this season one person will be in a Gumby costume and no one will be quite sure who it is. If you are lucky enough to be on this team, we hope you have some sort of discount to a costume shop.

The Veterans
These guys have been around long enough to know the drill but not as long as the old guard.
  • 1.21 Kickawatts - Light Blue
You may better know them by their old name, I Need a Refill. Ok so its not exactly the same team as they do have a lot of new people this season, a new name and a new captain but the core of the team is the same.  In their previous form they were one of the toughest teams to beat but for some reason could never bring home the playoff championship.
  • Your Balls My Foot - Red
If history is any indicator, these guys do better when hardly anyone shows up and they just barely escape forfeit. They will try to distract you by leading off the first inning with some of the prettiest girls in kickball and then when you are too busy checking them out, Big Erik will kick the ball over everything.
  • Ballsagna - Navy
This was a brand new team last year, wearing bright orange t-shirts but this year they decided to change to Navy and hope to improve on their 4-4 record from last season.

The Converts
The players from these teams are mostly new to the Bayshore league but used to play (or in some cases also still play) in the Tuesday night Breaker League.
  • Gettin Kicky With It - Forest Green
Technically a brand new team but lots of veterans from Tuesday night's 99 Problems and Guttersnipes teams. They have a tough schedule so anything can happen but don't expect an easy victory when facing them. (at least I hope not since I'm on that team).
  • Where My Pitches At - Purple
They were new to the Breaker League last year and had a rough go at it. They started their kickball careers by losing by a combined 35-0 after 3 games. They made the switch to Thursday nights hoping that the Bayshore teams are a little easier on them.
  • We've got the Runs - White
Another team that decided that they might have better luck playing on Thursdays. Last season in Breaker they were 3-5 but rode a 2 game win streak into the end of the season.

The Rookies
Since they are new, we don't really know an awful lot about these teams other than their team names. We welcome them all to the league.
  • Don't Come on My Base - Charcoal
We will let the name speak for itself here.
  • 2 Legit to Kick - Maroon
They are clearly a bunch of hard core MC Hammer fans. We can't wait to see them dance. The music hits them so hard, makes them say "oh My Lord, Thank you for blessing me with a mind to rhyme and two hype feet" (Yes I know that's a different song but, sadly, the lyrics to 2 Legit to Quit are as forgettable as MC Hammer).
  • Balls Deep - Orange
This is one of the most popular team names around WAKA Nation but we haven't seen a Balls Deep in Tampa in a few years. Ironically enough, the last manifestation of Balls Deep almost never kicked the ball deep and in fact, had difficulty scoring.
  • I'd Hit It - Ice Gray
Another blast from the past name not related to the old team by the same name in the Breaker League.
  • Ron Burgundy and the Channel 4 News Team - Texas Orange
Love the name. We are slightly curious if the pungent aroma of Sex Panther Cologne can be an effective aphrodisiac at closing time at MacDinton's.
  • Lil' Moe With the Gimpy Leg - Gold
We are a little unsure of the name but we believe its an extremely obscure Home Alone 2 reference. If that is where they get the team name, we are slightly concerned about this team's obsession with Macaulay Culkin.

Breaker Week 3 Recap

Things have been busy in WAKA land lately with the Founders Cup and everything so the blog has been a bit behind but we still want to keep you up to date on what's going on in the league so here is what happened in week 3.

Our week 3 games were played on some pretty soggy field conditions which is extremely unusual at PAL. The field usually has fantastic drainage but it just couldn't keep up with the ridiculous amount of rain that we had recently had, which made for some really fun kickball.

Our first game of the night was between Asstastic Balls and Free Ballers. Now this game can be summed up very simply by me telling you that Erik was pissed after this game. Freeballers still carry the stigma of the old Masterbatters team. The Masterbatters were fun but not particularly good. Asstastic is traditionally a really fun team that has maybe lost a little bit of that jovial spirit in exchange for a competitive attitude. They had thought they could roll over the Free Ballers but were shocked by the final outcome. Free Ballers won 4-3.

Our second game of the night was between Cleats and Cleavage and We've Got The Runs in a battle of the defeateds. Remember in the beginning of the season I was telling you all about how Cleats and Cleavage was one of the 3 teams who had ever won a championship before? Yeah I can't blame you if you don't really remember that. Meanwhile the rookie We've Got the Runs has been, well, respectable, losing their first 2 games by only a run. This one was over pretty quickly as We've Got The Runs won 6-0.

Our first late game saw the Seminoles take the field against Booze on First. Booze on first scored a huge victory in this one. They were the first team of the season who did not lose by slaughter rule to the Seminoles! A huge accomplishment indeed. Still though, the Seminoles rolled. What else is new? Seminoles won 7-0.

Next up was Where My Pitches At and Barbara Ballters. I've got some exciting news for this one. I didn't have to put together a write up because Brett from Barbara Ballters wrote one up for me. After two disheartening weeks, Where My Pitches At started off with a bang against Barbara Ballters. They won the chug-off. That’s no big feat though, because Barbara Ballters is a team full of pansies who hasn’t won a chug-off in 3 seasons. Unfortunately for Where My Pitches At, the game started after the chug-off. It was all Ballters with a 14-0 win. After the game, an anonymous member of Where My Pitches At told the Ballters they win the non-assholes award. Barbara Ballters would like to thank the Seminoles and 99 Problems for being so douchey, that Where My Pitches At actually thought the Ballters were cool. It is worth noting that Ballters scored their 14 runs in only 5 innings of offense. Last week, the blog discussed whether who was better- the Seminoles who scored 14 runs in 6 innings against Where My Pitches At, or 99 Problems who scored 11 runs in 5 innings against Where My Pitches At. The answer is clearly Barbara Ballters who put up 14 runs in 5 innings. Boom. Barbara Ballters officially won 12-0 due to the 12 run cap on differential.

Last but not least was the Bonafide Guttersnipes vs 99 Problems. This was the marquis matchup of the week with both teams coming in undefeated and both teams expecting to be successful this season but neither had been tested yet. While the matchup was top notch, the field conditions on field 3 were not. The field was in more suitable condition for mud wrestling than for kickball, especially around first base. On a night when the conditions meant that anything could happen, both teams scored 2 in the first but 99 was able to scratch out another 3. In the last inning it looked like the Guttersnipes might be able to mount a rally with no outs but some pretty impressive defensive play by the 99 ladies resulted in a momentum busting double play and then the last out of the game. 99 Problems won 5-3.

If you would like to participate in providing content for the blog, please talk to Erik or me at the fields and we can get you hooked up.

Breaker Week 2 Recap

Week 2 is now in the books for the Breaker league and we are starting to see who has it and who doesn't. I could sit here all day and bore you with an incredibly mind blowing analysis and introduction to this weeks games but, frankly, I just don't feel like it. So lets talk about what actually happened.

Even Seminole Babies
take kickball seriously
Our first game of the night had the Seminoles take the field against Where My Pitches At. I said it before and I will say it again Where My Pitches At's start to their kickball career is nothing less than unfair. This team should be burning Erik in effigee for scheduling their first 3 games against 99 Problems, Seminoles and Barbara Ballters. Last week they lost 11-0, this week 14-0 and next week they don't look to do much better. At the bar last night a couple of players said that it was a ton of fun, which is awesome, but they also told me that their defense looks good. I sadly had to remind them that giving up 25 runs in just 2 games probably isn't the sign of a good defense. The Seminoles were taking great pride in the fact that they beat this team by more than 99 Problems did last week. Here is the problem with that, last week 99 Problems was the home team so they only kicked 5 times since they didn't need their last time around at the plate. The Seminoles specifically wanted to be the away team so that they could pile it on in the last inning because that's just what they do. They scored 3 runs in the last inning of this game so all things being equal, both 99 and Seminoles scored 11 runs in 5 innings. What does this matter? It doesn't at all because runs for do not count in any tie breaker for the standings. Also there is a cap to run differential in any game so even though this one ended 14-0, it will be recorded as 12-0.

Our second game of the night was a bit of a doozie as Free Ballers and Bonafide Guttersnipes matched up. Judging by all of the preseason hype, this should have been an easy one to call but it was much closer than they drew it up on paper. Free Ballers were able to get the first run on the board and their defense was holding strong thanks to some timely pop ups by the Guttersnipes. That was until the top of the 6th inning where I am told there was a rousing team speech that went something like this, “Are you kidding me? We are the fucking Guttersnipes. We've talked way too much shit to lose to this team. We've written checks our bodies can't cash. We need to do something now, its go time”, and go they did by throwing up a 6 spot in the top half of the last frame. Guttersnipes won 6-1.

Actual photo of Beast ready
to make a catch
Our late games started off with Asstastic Balls and Cleats & Cleavage. The first run of the game may have been the most exciting as Asstastic's Tracy slid into third to avoid a throw. The throw went wide and she was able to score on the overthrown ball. Beast was all over the field in this one, making play after play, pushing teammates out of the way to make defensive plays while grunting, “No beast ball, me catch”. It may seem unnecessarry but someone had to do something as Cheddi is also on the team who misplayed a deep fly to centerfield. I interviewed Cheddi at the bar and he had this to say about the game, “I really tried my best man, I really gave it everything I had but despite my best efforts, I couldn't make our team lose, our team was just too good today and with Beast out there, losing was a losing battle”. Asstastic Balls won 4-2.

There must have been something about field 2 last night because the game between Barbara Ballters and We've Got The Runs was just as entertaining as the early game on the same field. This game was a gem with the teams tied at 2 going into the 6th inning. That's when the real action stared. With 2 outs in the top half of the last inning We've Got the Runs was threatening and got a girl to 3rd on a close play. On the play, however, JR from Barbara Ballters channeled his inner possum and fell to the ground playing dead. The girl backed up off of the base to give him room and JR got up and tagged her out. It was a dick move but it was definitely effective. After the game he had this to say about it, "People may call me a dick but all I do is win no matter what bitches." In the bottom half of the inning Barbara Ballters was able to get bases loaded before sending a blast to the outfield that probably would have scored 3 but they only needed 1 to walk off. Barbara Ballters won 3-2.

Our final matchup of the night was 99 Problems vs Booze on First. This was a highly anticipated matchup but not because of the kickball game. Cory from Booze and Justin from 99 are the two best chuggers in the league by far and anytime they face off its epic. This chug was no different as both chuggers downed their beer in a single swallow but Cory turned his cup over just slightly faster. In the game itself 99 was able to take a shut out into the 6th inning before Booze on First was able to mount a little bit of a rally. The shutout was broken up when 99 Problems outfielders Matt and Tricia decided that sharing was caring and connected in a loving embrace in the outfield, kickball between them, allowing the Booze on First runner to score. Despite an incredible amount of talk from a guy with a sweaty elbow problem, Booze on First just didn't have enough to overcome their deficit. 99 Problems won 5-1.

Bayshore Midseason Report

This blog has historically been for the Tuesday night Breaker league but the Bayshore league deserves a little bit of love too. Considering that Bayshore is now at the midway point in the season, its the perfect time to do a midseason report card for them.. You can take the grades one of 3 ways. They are completely accurate, they are graded on a curve according to expectations or they are completely made up and have no basis in reality what so ever. I prefer to think its option 3. So here is how we rank each of the teams in the Bayshore league in no particular order (actually we will list them in alphabetical order but you probably already noticed that).

* denotes rookie team

Ballistic Logistic* - B-
Usually its unfair when a new team plays a veteran team in the first week of the season as the new team usually gets killed but Ballistic Logistic started this season against a flat YBMF and looked like a strong team. They have had a hard time getting back to their winning ways since then but should hold their own. Don't be surprised if this team is in the middle of the pack by the end of the season.
Record: 1-3
Games so far: Your Balls My Foot (6-2 win), Gator Done (3-4 loss), Pick Me Up (0-11 loss), Red Balls and Lick Her (3-6 loss)

Ballsagna - A+
It is a little tough to really figure out how this team is. Pick Me Up is a strong team so they were expected to lose that game in week 1. Their win against Balls N Dolls was actually by forfeit but their loss to YBMF was a big negative as YBMF had only 8 players that day. So why do they get an A+? Have you seen them? All of their players always show up all of the time, they always have fun at the bar and their girls are beautiful. How does that not score an A+?
Record: 2-2
Games so far: Pick Me Up (4-9 loss), Balls N Dolls (5-0 win), Your Balls My Foot (1-2 loss), Thunderstruck (10-2 win)

Balls N Dolls - C
Balls N Dolls is one of our more veteran teams and were one time league champions. They are pretty stacked with atheletes and could be the most dominant team in the league. I say could because their achilles heal is just trying to get people to the field. Their one loss this season was due to forfeit and they almost forfeited in week 4 until the whole team showed up about 2 minutes after the game was scheduled to start. If you have these guys remaining on your schedule, hope they forfeit, it may be your best shot.
Record: 3-1
Games so far: Red Balls and Lick Her (12-0 win), Ballsagna (0-5 loss), I Need a Refill (3-2 win), Pick Me Up (3-0 win)

Camel Toes - A
In case you haven't noticed, Camel Toes is special. We couldn't blame you if you wondered if the team worked in a costume shop because they love themes. There are usually 2 things that the Camel Toes are consistent with, they are a lot of fun and they don't win a lot of games. At least one of those doesn't seem to be true anymore as they were undefeated in their first 3 games. The best way to prepare for your game against these guys is to ask for gift certificates to Party City.
Record: 3-1
Games so far: Thunderstruck (5-3 win), Team Awesome Ball Kickers (5-0 win), Looking to Score (13-1 win), Off Constantly (0-4 loss)

Debauchery - B+
This team came in 3rd place in the Spring and on paper should have improved but so have some other teams so it may be tough for them to return to that level this season. They have to get some credit as their 2 losses were against 2 of the top teams in the league.
Record: 2-2
Games so far: Off Constantly (3-7 loss), Red Balls and Lick Her (2-1 win), Team Awesome Ball Kickers (6-0 win), I Need a Refill (0-7 loss)

Gator Done* - B-
Gator Done may have the most favorable schedule of any team. They only play 2 of the top tier teams (Balls N Dolls and Pick Me Up) which they have still yet to play. Even so, it may be tough for this group of rookies to do more than break even on the season.
Record: 2-2
Games so far: Team Awesome Ball Kickers (0-1 loss), Ballistic Logistics (4-3 win), Red Balls and Lick Her (10-2 win), Your Balls My Foot (0-8 loss)

I Need a Refill - A
This team just does not give up runs. They made it to the championship game in the Summer season but lost to 99 Problems (now playing in the Tuesday night Breaker league) in an extremely close game. The second half of their schedule is much easier than what they have played so far. It would probably be a shock if this team isn't in the finals of the playoffs.
Record: 3-1
Games so far: Looking to Score (12-0 win), Off Constantly (2-0 win), Balls N Dolls (2-3 loss), Debauchery (7-0 win)

Looking to Score* - D
What is there to say? We love this team and we hope they stick around but this season has not been easy on them. Their biggest problem may be the team name. We have had other teams by the same name before and usually they jokingly changed it during the season to things like "Still looking to Score", "Not Scoring Yet" or "When am I Ever Going to Score". Hopefully for them the week 4 offensive explosion will be the catalyst they need to consistently throw some runs on the board but they shouldn't feel too down if that doesn't happen in week 5 against the OC.
Record: 0-4
Games so far: I Need a Refill (0-12 loss), Thunderstruck (0-6 loss), Camel Toes (1-13 loss), Team Awesome Ball Kickers (6-10 loss)

Off Constantly - A
We are glad to have this team back after taking a season off to play team handball or whatever it was that they decided to do. This was my team for the longest time and we never won anything. I left the team and they became a dominant force overnight. I'm not quite sure how that should make me feel. Defense is this team's strong suit but they also score in big bunches. They were one of the teams that played over the summer in the Big Guava league and averaged giving up only a run per game. They are looking even better this season but their biggest tests will be in the last 2 weeks of the season against Pick Me Up and Balls N Dolls.
Record: 3-1
Games so far: Debauchery (7-0 win), I Need a Refill (0-2 loss), Thunderstruck (13-1 win), Camel Toes (4-0 win)

Pick Me Up - B+
This is the the most veteran team in the Bayshore league and are also a one time league champ. They have players who started their WAKA careers as early as 2004 or 2005. They have a good balance of being a laid back bunch and also being a tough team to beat.
Record: 3-1
Games so far: Ballsagna (9-4 win), Your Balls My Foot (7-3 win), Ballistic Logistic (11-0 win), Balls N Dolls (0-3 loss)

Red Balls and Lick Her* - C+
This brand new team had the toughest draw of week one. Their baptism by fire in week one was a drumming by Balls N Dolls. The score officially showed up as 12-0 but it was really something like 25-0. Luckily for them they have a couple of all star veterans who have played for other teams in the past and they have improved quite a bit since that first week. They will have their big test of the season against Pick Me Up in week 5. They have the potential to put themselves into a position to be the most improved team in the second half.
Record: 1-3
Games so far: Balls N Dolls (0-12 loss), Debauchery (1-2 loss), Gator Done (2-10 loss), Ballistic Logistic (6-3 win)

Team Awesome Ball Kickers* - B
If only a team could be as their name implies. Rumor has it that for the first 3 weeks of the season they had forgotten their team name and just simply knew themselves as the gray team and the offense suffered. That was before their week 4 matchup when the remembered that they are supposed to be awesome ball kickers and the offense exploded for 10 runs. For many new teams it just takes one really good offensive game for things to start to click. Unfortunately, that is not likely to happen in this case as they take on I Need a Refill and Off Constantly in the next 2 weeks.
Record: 2-2
Games so far: Gator Done (1-0 win), Camel Toes (0-5 loss), Debauchery (0-6 loss), Looking to Score (10-6 win)

Thunderstruck* - B-
How can you not love a team with this name? So what if their only win of the season so far was against a winless team. They are out to have fun and isn't that why we all joined WAKA Kickball to begin with? They have a tough schedule left so there is really no pressure. Hopefully we can hear some AC/DC as this team takes the field.
Record: 1-3
Games so far: Camel Toes (3-5 loss), Looking to Score (6-0 win), Off Constantly (1-13 loss), Ballsagna (2-10 loss)

Your Balls My Foot - A+
For what its worth, Your Balls My Foot was the worst team from the Spring season who actually returned. They started out the season pretty poorly, losing to a brand new team, but have slowly improved since then. For them it seems like their winning formula is to have lots of people not show up. Their 2 wins so far this season occured when they had only 8 and 11 players show up. They like to live up to their motto, "Win or lose, we still booze". Why do they get an A+? Because its my team, duh!
Record: 2-2
Games so far: Ballistic Logistics (2-6 loss), Pick Me Up (3-7 loss), Ballsagna (2-1 win), Gator Done (8-0 win)

Power Rankings

Balls N Dolls - (3-1) Only loss so far this season is by forfeit. They are quickly proving that the spring season was an anomoly.
I Need a Refill - (3-1) Their defense is really tough as they have already posted 3 shutouts.
Off Constantly - (3-1) Defensively solid and when the offense gets going they can steamroll you.
Pick Me Up - (3-1) Great record so far but they just haven't been tested yet.
Debauchery - (2-2) Their biggest problem this season will probably be inconsistently.
Camel Toes - (3-1) It remains to be seen if their hot start to the season was smoke and mirrors.
Your Balls My Foot - (2-2) Consider your team in trouble if you are scheduled against YBMF and they barely have enough people to play.
Team Awesome Ball Kickers - (2-2)
Red Balls and Lick Her - (1-3) Their 2 veterans are starting to show this bunch of rookies how to play.
10 Gator Done - (2-2) They have benefited from an easy schedule so far.
11 Ballsagna - (2-2) Two words. Hot girls.
12 Ballistic Logistic - (1-3) They got off to a good start but are riding a 3 game losing streak.
13 Thunderstruck - (1-3) Their 6-0 win against Looking to Score may be more of a reflection on LtS than Thunderstruck.
14 Looking to Score - (0-4) They are the only team that has not won a game yet. Their best chance may be in week 8

The WAKA Shame and the Hookup Waiver

The WAKA Shame, its not just a clever and popular team name. If you are new in your kickball career, you may not be aware of it yet but there is a very real thing called the WAKA Shame. If it hasn't happened to you yet, statistics show that it more than likely will happen to you sometime soon. WAKA Kickball is notorious for creating the perfect catalyst for romantic encounters and by romantic encounters we mean good old fashioned dirty hookups. This leads to the the WAKA Shame.

Similar to the Walk of Shame, the WAKA Shame is a common occurrence the morning after kickball and is easily identified by the fact that you are wearing your kickball t-shirt and gym shorts from the night before. The WAKA Shame is most often followed up by calling in sick to work.

This phenomenon has the potential to cause some uncomfortable situations, especially if it happens too early in the season. We here at the GMOT are fully in favor of a drama free environment so we had our crack legal team* work up a document that should help you if you ever find yourself in a situation that could lead to a WAKA Shame.

The Hookup Waiver

Upon signature of this document both individuals involved in a hookup hereby agree to the following stipulations:

  1. Parties agree to not be bothered if the other party does not call or contact them in any way.
  2. Any contact that is made shall be conducted over text messaging or in person at the bar during last call with the sole purpose of instituting another hookup.
  3. Additional hookups shall not be expected, anticipated or looked forward to and should only happen in instances of spontaneity when neither party can find anyone better to hook up with.
  4. Both parties agree to not be bothered if either party chooses to ignore the other, spend time with other parties or hook up with other parties.
  5. Both parties agree to be discrete and act as if nothing ever happened while in the presence of other non-involved parties.
  6. Details of the hookup shall not be discussed with teammates or anyone else you may ever see near a kickball field, kickball sponsor bar or anywhere else that kickballers may be found.
This waiver shall be considered legally binding and any violation of this waiver shall result in legal action in a court of law.
**This document is not legally binding in any US State, US Territory, Commonwealth Nation, Nation recognized by the UN or any other place on Earth. Use at your own risk.
Our crack legal team also suggests that any conversation that has the potential to lead up to a WAKA Shame should start off with, "Hey there. So, you want to sign a waiver with me?". Hopefully this document can help you get through any possible uncomfortable situations that may result from your WAKA Shame.

Captains, please be responsible and be sure to print out several copies and keep them with you at all times. It is important to have this document on hand for use by your team members when they most need it.

*We can not verify that our legal team is, in fact, a team of attorneys but they do wear suits. Ok, so the suits are old and ratty and smelly. In fact, our "crack legal team" is actually just some crack heads but they were hanging out near the courthouse so it is entirely possible that they were either at one time attorneys or at least have some inside knowledge of how our legal system works.

FL Bayshore League Party on Sep 30th

The Thursday, FL Bayshore League will be having its league party on Friday September 30th at Elmers in Ybor. This has been a great venue in the past and is guaranteed to be a great time. The beer starts pouring at 7pm and its free to registered FL Bayshore players and $10 for guests. Details on the FL Breaker league party should be coming soon.

Don't forget to RSVP for the FL Bayshore Party.

Erik's Zeus Beard

For those of you who have played with us a while you have noticed that our WAKA Customer Service Rep has been sporting a new beard that has grown rather impressive in the last couple of months. What you may not have realized is that every year Erik participates in a program with St Baldrick's. He shows his support for children with cancer by having his head shaved and raising money at the same time to help fund childhood cancer research.

He decided that he was just too young and his beard is too dark to secure a job as Santa Clause at the mall this winter so he has decided to make the beard part of the fun.

You can view his page on the St Baldrick's Foundation website to view a message from him and donate to the cause.

WAKA Bucs Night!

FL Breaker Week 1 Recap

Well Well Well, The blog took a bit of a rest over the summer but the FL Breaker League is back at it for the Fall. To give you a little recap of what you might have missed over the summer, 99 Problems, Asstastic Balls, Barbara Ballters and Booze on first joined some of the Thursday Bayshore teams and a couple of newbies to play in the FL Big Guava League. That Wednesday night season was definitely one of the most competitive seasons Tampa has ever seen. There were 4 teams that ended the season with only 1 loss and in the end 99 Problems represented the Breaker league well by posting 4 wins in the playoffs and taking home the title.

So we enter this season with 3 teams who have championship hardware Seminoles (last season's champions), 99 Problems (Summer league champions) and Cleats and Cleavage (last Fall's champions though they were called Balls N Dolls at the time). So now that we have that useless information out of the way, lets talk about this season and look at week 1's matchups.

We started out our season with We've Got The Runs taking on Booze on First. Don't confuse this We've Got the Runs team with the old group of nurses that we used to have. This is a brand new team to the FL Breaker league and they are hoping that they have a lot more luck with the name than the old team who would have been more appropriately named We've got the Run or even We Ain't Got No Runs. Booze on first is a veteran team that has a tendency to be a bit schizophrenic. In the past they struggled with the offense but Defense was their specialty. This season's installment is a big question mark though as there were a few defections to a new team this season, but more on that later. Booze on First took this one 2-1.

Our second game of the night was between the Bonafide Guttersnipes and Asstastic Balls. The Guttersnipes are hoping to be a new superteam. The core of the team came from Booze on First but they drew in players from other sources too, including Cleats and Cleavage. The jury is still out about how good they will be but they are rumored to claim that they will walk away with the championship this season. In case you were wondering, according to Dictionary.com a guttersnipe is "1. A person belonging to or characteristic of the lowest social group in a city or 2. a street urchin". According to Urban Dictionary a guttersnipe is "pickled human feces, served in bars". Lets hope that they go with street urchin. Asstastic is a bit of an enigma. There are days when they show up looking like the best team in the league and other days they show up looking like they just learned how to walk. The one thing they are consistent on is that they are a fun team to play. Bonafied Guttersnipes won in a close one 2-0.

Our late games started out with what was probably the most unfair matchup of the night with 99 Problems gearing up against Where My Pitches At. 99 Problems just came off of their Summer championship and are hoping to repeat this fall. They are usually a fun group to play but expect them to be competitive. They almost always have some sort of baked treats to share with their opponent and travel in bright orange packs. They can most easily be found in their natural environment, at the flip cup table at MacDinton's while rocking out to Party Rock Anthem. Where My Pitches is a brand new team. Their 2 most veteran players are from the old Masterbatters team so they aren't likely to be at the top of the table at the end of the season but judging by their showing at the bar, they should have a fun time this season anyways. Its a good thing they are a fun bunch because they start their kickball careers in the most brutal week possible with week 1 against 99 Problems, week 2 against the Seminoles and week 3 against Barbara Ballters. Lets hope they are still around for week 4 against Asstastic. 99 Problems won this one 11-0.

On field 2 Free Ballers and Barbara Ballters faced off against each other. So Free Ballers is mostly the old Masterbatters. The old Masterbatters were a lovable bunch. They were usually pretty fun to play and not only because they were easy to beat. They were always good sports about the ribbing they took on the field and on this blog but this season they have a new name and new leadership so they hope to change their fortunes. Meanwhile, Barbara Ballters was a big surprise last season. They came in as a brand new team and showed that you don't need to be a group of veterans to be a good team. They were a big spoiler at the end of the Spring season for 99 Problems. This game took way too long thanks to some extremely time consuming pitching. Not only did the Free Ballers pitcher take too much time between pitches but he was also pitching illegally. According to rule 8.02b and rule 1.01d in the WAKA Rulebook, the pitcher must start the act of pitching from within 12 feet of the pitcher's strip. It wasn't called because it wasn't caught by the refs early in the game but now you all know and knowing is half the battle. Yo Joe! Barbara Ballters got of to a good start to the season and won 6-2.

Our last game of the night was between Seminoles and Cleats and Cleavage. The Seminoles are one of the most dominant teams this league has ever seen and definitely the most dominant active team. When you play the Seminoles, don't expect to have much fun and don't expect to win. In fact, expect to get your butts whooped. Cleats and Cleavage is one of the of the more chill teams in the whole league. Its hard to tell how they will be on the field this season after losing some of their better players to the Guttersnipes but its hard to imagine them ever not being fun. The Seminoles certainly had fun with them this week, beating them 12-0.

2. Make sure this is a crappy white shirt that did not cost you more than five dollars or so..
3. Bring some sharpie markers

The party and drink specials will take place at the outside bar. At the Pre-Season Party we will be having a “Chug-off with a twist” Contest as well as a team flip cup and individual King of the Table flip cup tournament. To enter the flip cup team contest it will be $35 dollars per team to participate. Teams will consist of 7 team members at $5 dollars per person. Please help out and support this great charity, and earn some bragging rights to kick off the season right!!! If you would be interested in participating in the contests, please let your captains know so I can get an accurate count before the 25th. Yes, Teams can enter more than one team for the contest.

“Wait.. Jaime, what is this Flip cup you all seem so excited about? I am new to all of the Kickball jargon and need some clarification….”

Well… Let me explain..

Standard match consists of anywhere from 4 to 8 players per team. Once you have been placed on a team you cannot switch until after the match is completed. Each team picks a side of the table they want to be on and then each player will fill their cup with a small amount of beer. There is no official amount of beer, but a good rule of thumb is to go up to the first line of your plastic cup if there is any debate. Designate one end of the table as the starting end, and the other as the anchor end. The first player at the starting side will be assigned cup #1 and so on down the line. The game starts when both player #1's tap each other's cup and then tap the table. Also known as "The Gentleman's Start." From there each player #1 will drink the amount of beer in the cup. Then they will place the cup FACE UP on the edge of the table and proceed to flip the cup until it lands FACE DOWN. Then player #2 can drink their beer and proceed to flip, and so on down the line until all team members have flipped. The first team to flip all of their cups wins that game.

If 2 cups on opposing sides land at the same time you go to a tie breaker known as JUNGLE RULES (see below). Remember, if 2 cups hit the table at the same time, it is the cup that settles first that wins.

The winner of the match is the first team to reach the designated amount of game victories. If there are 4 players on each team, the first team to 4 games wins the match. If there are 5 players on each team, the first team to 5 games wins the match, and so on. This method will give every player the chance to start a round. And as always, you must win by 2. (WED tournament: 7 Players, 5 rounds)

JUNGLE RULES

Jungle Rules is when everyone at the table participates at the same time. The entire table will begin with the Gentleman's Start, and then everyone will flip. The first team to have every team member flip their cup will win.

KING OF THE TABLE RULES (KOT)

This can be described as a combination of Survivor and Jungle rules. You can have as many players as your table will hold. The whole table will Gentleman's Start and the last player to flip their cup is voted off. This will continue until 1 player is left, and they are the King of the Table.

A very important rule of KOT is that once the game starts you cannot leave the table until you either lose, or the game is over. With so many people playing it is important to keep the game moving.

CHEATING
If two hands are used to flip or guide the cup it, is an illegal flip. Only one hand is permitted to make the flip. The non-flipping hand may act strictly as balance assistance for the cup on the edge of the table. Sometimes you are forced to play on tables with "less than ideal" edges, so it is necessary for added support. This in no way is meant to help guide the cup during the flip; just to keep it from falling off of the table. Also the non flipping hand must remain completely still during the flip if it is used for balance assistance. This will eliminate any debate about it being used as a guide. The only time contact with the cups by 2 hands is allowed is to place the cup on the edge or to re-set the cup if a complete flip is not made.

Winning Team and winning individual will both receive awards and a very nice buzz.

Flip Cup Physics 1 – Defining the cup

Here we define the geometry and some mechanical properties of the cup. The assumptions are that the cup is a rigid, 1-dimensional (infinitely thin) rotationally symmetric body with a uniform mass distribution along its length.

Flip Cup Physics 2 – Moment of Inertia

Part 1, we determine the moment of inertia about a pivot point, chosen to be on one of the corners. We will again look at 2-dimensional slice through the centre of the cup – subsequent chapters may explore fully 3D models.

With the help of the Parallel Axis Theorem and Mathematica’s “FullSimplify” function, we finally arrive at the following :

OK.. Lesson Over~

Its On Like Donkey Kong

Champions for the FL Breaker League will be determined tonight after the playoff tournament was rain shortened on Saturday.

We were having a fantastic tournament with plenty of twists and turns until a monsoon decided to hit. The skies were looking angrier and angrier and the wind was picking up. Just as the semi-final games were getting started we saw some lightning and a gust of wind came that dropped the temperature about 20 degrees. It was amazing to see everyone break down their tents and vacate the field as quickly as they did. Well, except for Suck My Kick who decided to take the opportunity to play duck-duck-goose in the rain.

So tonight we will reconvene at the PAL fields for the final 4 matchup. Seminoles vs Suck My Kick and Barbara Ballters vs Booze on First.

Do you miss Donkey Kong? Wish you could play it again? Check this out.

Who will win the FL Breaker Spring 2011 Championship?
